KENYA BANS PROTESTS SETTING UP SHOWDOWN WITH OPPOSITION SUPPORTERS

ON WEDNESDAY, THOUSANDS OF ODINGA SUPPORTERS DEMONSTRATED IN FRONT OF ELECTION COMMISSION OFFICES IN NAIROBI, MOMBASA AND THE WESTERN OPPOSITION STRONGHOLD OF KISUMU.

ODINGA'S BACKERS HAVE HELD WEEKLY PROTESTS AGAINST THE ELECTION COMMISSION WHICH THEY ACCUSE OF FAVORING KENYATTA.

NAIROBI -- The Kenyan government outlawed demonstrations in three major cities on Thursday ahead of opposition plans to hold massive rallies around the country demanding electoral reform.
Odinga's backers have held weekly protests against the election commission which they accuse of favoring Kenyatta.
Kenyatta, who presents himself as a pro-business candidate, is from the dominant Kikuyu tribe.
